There are mid-majors. And then there are programs like Troy.
Troy just finished No. 6 in the country.
Not No. 6 among mid-majors.
No. 6 in all of Division I baseball.
They beat Florida twice in one day. They went 5-4 against SEC programs. They hosted their first Super Regional. And for the first time in program history, Troy went to Omaha.
That's why this is a program I wanted to break down for families.
Troy is technically a D1 mid-major.
But there was nothing mid-level about the baseball they played this year.
And when I'm helping a family build a college list, these are the programs I pay close attention to.
Because you can get legitimate high-level Division I baseball, play against some of the best teams in the country, compete deep into the postseason and potentially reach Omaha, without playing in a Power 4 conference.
Troy just proved it.
The run itself was impressive. They entered the Gainesville Regional as a No. 3 seed, lost their opener, then won four straight elimination games, including beating Florida twice in one day. They hosted and swept the Super Regional at Riddle-Pace Field, then picked up the first College World Series win in program history by coming back to beat Ole Miss.
Even more important: this wasn’t a fluke on an easy schedule. Troy played the No. 1 non-conference strength of schedule in the country, finished with seven ranked wins (four of them top-10), and went 5-4 against SEC teams. They tested themselves all year and belonged on that stage.
The board:
For 2027 we see four known commits: Myles Collins at catcher, Luke Winbush at third base, and right-handers Jack Johnson and Caeden Patterson. No known outfielders and no known left-handed pitchers yet. That doesn’t automatically mean openings, but those are the position groups worth a closer look when you stack them against the current roster.
For 2028 the board is completely open right now. Zero known commits across every position.
Timing matters here. Troy now has an Omaha appearance, a College World Series win, a top-six national finish, and a Super Regional atmosphere recruits can actually picture themselves in. Skylar Meade and his staff have a very different story to tell than they did a year ago. Attention around this program is going to climb.
Honest fit:
Troy has roughly 13,000 undergrads, a 16:1 student-to-faculty ratio, about a 93% acceptance rate, and an average GPA around 3.36. Tuition sits near $9,312 in-state and $18,624 out-of-state.
You get real D1 baseball, a chance to face major-conference competition, postseason baseball, and a staff that just took the program to Omaha. All without the Power 4 label or the Power 4 price tag.
“Mid-major” describes the conference landscape. It does not describe the level of baseball. Troy just finished ahead of a lot of bigger brands.
The recruiting question is simple: Does your son fit what they’re building next, and does the staff know who he is while the board is still open?
That’s the part most families miss.
