If your family is only hunting Division I baseball, Catawba is the exact kind of program you’ll miss, and after this spring, that would be a mistake.

Catawba just finished the winningest season in school history.

‍

49 wins.

‍

Third straight SAC regular-season title.
Fifth Southeast Region championship.

‍

And a run all the way to the Division II national semifinal.

‍

This isn’t a nice little D2 year. This is one of the best programs at its level in the country right now.

‍

Jim Gantt just wrapped his 30th season as head coach. Same guy since 1996. While half the staffs in college baseball turn over every few years, Gantt keeps winning. He took home ABCA Southeast Region Coach of the Year for the fifth time and SAC Coach of the Year for a league-record 14th time.

‍

Then came the draft validation. First baseman Brandon Crabtree went to the Texas Rangers in the 16th round, Catawba’s first pick since 2019 and the 18th under Gantt. Crabtree hit .413 with 18 homers and 73 RBI after being named SAC Player of the Year and First Team All-American. The Rangers didn’t care that it said D2 next to the name. They cared that he could play.

Now, the board- this is where it gets interesting.

2027
Only one commit so far: Sam Rice, LHP from Reagan, NC. That leaves the rest of the board almost completely open at every other position.

‍

Compare that to the current junior class, which has multiple position players already on the roster and very little pitching depth.

‍

Doesn’t mean a bunch of open spots are just sitting there. Roster construction is never that clean. But if you’ve got a 2027 position player who can actually play at this level, you want eyes on this board while it’s still open, especially at a program that just made the national semifinal.

2028
Zero known commits across the board. The current sophomore group is loaded with right-handed pitchers and thinner on the position-player side. Perfect reason to study the roster instead of just firing off emails.

‍

For 2029s, this is the kind of program you get on the radar early. Three straight conference titles and another national run means other kids are going to find it too.

‍

Honest fit: Catawba is a small private school, roughly 1,200 undergrads. Not 40,000. Some kids want the big-campus energy. Others want smaller classes, tighter community, and a chance to actually play meaningful baseball under a coach who’s been doing this for three decades.

‍

Stop ranking schools by the division logo. There are D1 programs where your son will fight for scraps on a mediocre roster. And there are places like Catawba where he can develop, compete for championships, play deep into May, and put himself in front of pro scouts.

‍

Crabtree just proved the last part again.

‍

The real question isn’t “What’s the biggest logo that will take him?”

‍
It’s “Where can he get better, play for something real, and become the best version of himself?”

‍

Catawba is a clean answer to that question for the right kid. The only other question is whether Gantt’s staff knows who he is before the board fills.

That doesn’t happen by accident.
