College Spotlight: University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign
I guide parents & baseball players towards a successful college experience | Visit my website
I had a chance to talk to the coaching staff at the University of Illinois recently, and they are on the hunt for high-quality sophomore and junior players, both on and off the field.
Coach specifically said high-character guys who work their tail off.
I love that!
They have a big conference series this weekend against Penn State. Keep an eye on that series.

The Numbers That Matter
Location: Champaign, Illinois — Illinois Field
Conference: Big Ten — the toughest conference slate in college baseball
Head Coach: Dan Hartleb — 21st season, program's all-time wins leader
2024 Season: Big Ten Champions, NCAA Regional, 104 home runs (program record)
2025 Season: 597 career wins for Hartleb — the most in program history
Facility: The $8 million Susan and Clint Atkins Baseball Training Center, a 26,000-square-foot indoor facility completed in 2022
The Man in the Dugout Has Been Here 35 Years
Dan Hartleb is not a hired gun. He is not chasing a bigger job. He has been part of the Illinois program since 1991, as an assistant, then as the head coach since 2006. That kind of tenure is almost extinct in college baseball.
He has been named Big Ten Coach of the Year twice and was voted Big Ten Coach of the Decade for the 2010s by D1Baseball. Every Illini who has played four years for Hartleb has left with a winning percentage of .500 or better — in 20 seasons, that streak has never been broken.
In the summer of 2025, USA Baseball named him to the coaching staff of the Collegiate National Team. That is not an honor given to coaches on the way down.
The Players Who Wore Orange and Blue — Then Wore a Pro Uniform
Seventy-eight former Illinois players have reached the Major League level in program history. Under Hartleb, 96 Illini have gone on to play professionally, and 27 have been named All-Americans.
The most recognizable name: Michael Massey, now a starting second baseman for the Kansas City Royals. The most legendary: Scott Spiezio, the program's all-time home run leader with 48, who won World Series titles with two different teams.
The pipeline from Champaign to professional baseball is real, and it has been running for over a century.

About Alex
Meet your college baseball recruiting specialist: Alex Swenson.
As a high school baseball player, I navigated the college recruiting process all on my own. Despite average statistics, I landed a spot on a Division-1 baseball team Jacksonville University, where I became a 3-time team captain. Post-college, I became a D1 coach, scout, and recruiter at Georgetown University and Ole Miss, where we won an SEC championship.
After experiencing the process as both recruit and recruiter, I’ve successfully dissected the best strategies to connect with college coaches and draw offers from them.
Receive professional direction from Alex himself until your son commits to his desired school. A step-by-step action plan will be provided with strategic small-group coaching meetings every 2 weeks to ensure we are making progress. Included is a baseball networking platform that connects him to coaches, optimizes his exposure to scouts, alerts him to college camps and showcases, and MUCH MORE.
