Before Kyle Schwarber was launching home runs in the middle of a major-league lineup, he was a college kid being developed by a coach named Tracy Smith.

That coach is now at Michigan, and I got to talk to his coaching staff this week and they are building their next two recruiting classes right now.

That is the story here, and it is bigger than the brand.

‍

Yes, Michigan is one of the best universities in the world, and yes, this program went to the College World Series final in 2019, one win from a title. But the reason to look closely today is the man in the dugout.

‍

Tracy Smith has more than 930 career wins and is one of only three active coaches to take three different schools to the NCAA Tournament. At Indiana he won National Coach of the Year and delivered the only College World Series trip in that school's history. Across his career he has developed roughly 90 future MLB draft picks.

This is an elite developer building back toward that 2019 level, not resting on it. Catching a program on the way up, under a coach who develops players, and receiving an elite education is the opportunity.

Home games are at Ray Fisher Stadium, built in 1923, seating 4,000, on turf that keeps the Michigan spring from eating the schedule.

Now the board, and it rewards a careful read.

The arms are being handled. But four infielders graduate after 2027 and only two are committed to replace them. That is the clearest opening left in the class.

For 2028, the board is completely open. Zero commitments, at any position, with real departures coming across the infield, catcher, and pitching. If your son is a 2028, this is the window before it fills.

For 2029s, they are already starting to build out their board so they know who to watch develop and progress through the recruiting process.

Now the honest fit. Michigan filters on academics.

In-state tuition is $16,736. Out-of-state is $55,334. For a Michigan family, that in-state number is elite academics and Big Ten baseball at a public-school price, one of the best values in this whole series. For everyone else, the degree and academic money have to be part of the math.

Either way the bar is real: an 18 percent acceptance rate and a 3.88 average admitted GPA. If his grades are not competitive, Michigan is a dream, not a plan.

If they are, then Michigan pairs a world-class degree with a coach who turns players into pros, and that is worth a real strategy.

The right question is not whether your son would love to wear the block M. Every kid would. It is whether he fits what this program needs: his position, his metrics, his academics, his projection, his grad year, the roster timeline, the school fit, and whether the staff already knows who he is.

A staff building two classes at once will not find him on its own. He has to be in front of them, with the grades and the numbers, at the right time. That does not happen by accident.
