I spoke to the University of Tampa's coaching staff this past week and they said something that shocked me...most families put us (Tampa) on the list as a backup.
That is the biggest misread in Florida recruiting right now.
The Spartans went 51-9 in 2026 and won the national championship.
They also won it in 2025. And 2024.
Three straight.
No program in Division II baseball history had ever done that.
Only one program in all of NCAA baseball had done it before them at any level: USC, in the early 1970s.
The 2026 title was Tampa's 11th, the most of any program in D2 history.
They dropped game two of the championship series 12-4, then came back and won game three 8-4.
That is a team that does not flinch.
The man running it.
Joe Urso played at Tampa. He was an All-American there. He has coached his alma mater since 2002.
Eight national championships as a head coach, more than any coach in college baseball at any level.
He crossed 1,100 wins this spring and has won close to 75 percent of every game he has ever coached.
He is not building something. He built it, and nobody has matched it in twenty-five years.
Here is the part that should reframe this for your family.
UT Baseball Field seats 750 people.
The winningest baseball program in the country plays in a park smaller than most Friday night high school football crowds.
The grandstand went up in 2006. The field was refitted with artificial turf before the 2023 season, pushed by an alumni group working through Urso's wish list after the 2019 title.
That turf handles up to 20 inches of rain per hour. Urso says they can play 30 minutes after a storm as long as there is no lightning.
No cathedral. No TV deal. Just a program that removed every excuse not to be on the field.
If your son needs the spectacle, this is not his place.
If your son wants to win, it may be the best place in the country.
101 MLB draft picks. Nine reached the big leagues, including Tino Martinez and Lou Piniella.
This is not a step down from Division I.
For a lot of players it is a harder roster to crack.
Now the recruiting side.
For 2027, we are aware of 3 commitments:
- Ashton Cox • OF • Northside Christian, FL
- Lane Holley • OF • IMG Academy, FL
- Joseph Schilp • SS • Orchard Lake St. Mary's, MI
Two outfielders and a middle infielder.
Look at what is not there.
No catcher. No corner infielder. No arms.
For 2028s - No commits at this time.
That board is open.
Now the money, and this one surprises people.
Tampa is private. Tuition is $35,744.
There is no out-of-state penalty, because private schools do not have one.
A family in Michigan pays what a family in Hillsborough County pays.
That is a real number and it deserves a real conversation, not a dream-school conversation. Ask about aid early. Ninety-one percent of UT students receive grants or scholarships.
Academically: 10,594 undergraduates, 17 to 1 ratio, average admitted GPA of 3.60, and 85 percent of freshmen come back for year two.
Then read the acceptance rate again.
40.30 percent.
Tampa turns away almost six of every ten applicants.
Your son does not just have to earn the roster spot. He has to earn the admit.
Those are two completely different projects, and most families only plan for one of them.
The question is not whether your son would love to play at Tampa. Every kid would.
The question is whether he fits what this program needs, which means looking at:
- His position
- His metrics
- His academics
- His projection
- His grad year
- The roster timeline
- The school fit
- Whether the staff already knows who he is
That last one is where most recruitments are lost before they start.
A program coming off three straight national titles is not out searching for your son.
He has to already be in front of them, with evidence, at the right time.
That does not happen by accident.
